Begin
A word to meet the new year with, Neil said.
When I read that in an email back in early December, unable to see past Christmas, January seemed ages away, but a word appeared to me then that I’ve not shaken since. And you know how words are, once you see them, you see them everywhere.
Begin.
A new year is great time to begin, isn’t it? Literally, the whole world is telling us that a new year is all about new beginnings and fresh starts.
Where do I begin?
Begin – the act of something starting to happen or bringing something into being.
What comes to mind?
Start at the beginning. Beginner. Begin again.
An inkling, a thought, a seed of an idea. That could be the beginnings of something.
Starting is putting it into action, one tiny step at a time, building momentum to take it from beginning into being.
Begin. Start. Is. If that’s the sequence, then to begin is also in the intention.
This brings me back full circle to the new year theme. I chose intentions over resolutions – they’re less resolute – and as I look back at my new year’s intentions from just over a week ago, I notice that some have been instantly forgotten (did I even write that?), others too vague to action, some need more exploration. Maybe I need to begin again with a new list. But the great thing about beginning is that we can start any time.
Begin. That’s my word to meet the new year with. What’s yours?
Where might this week’s word take you?
I’m going to take my word and make a list of all the things that I might like to begin this year. Maybe you’d like to do the same?
