Permanent

I’m back with a one-word offering for you.

This week, I’ve unearthed the word Permanent.

Permanent

A constant state, remaining unchanged forever.

What comes to mind?

Rocks. Permanent markers. Scars.

But even rocks form, shift, crumble and erode.

Marks fade and yellow.

Scars shrink and shine.

What is permanent? There are permanent things in our lives – people, places, passions – that both shift and remain constantly with us. Is anything truly permanent?

I look to etymology for clarity: ‘Remaining to the end’. To the end of what?

The only permanence is change.

Where might this week’s word take you?

What first came to mind when you read the word Permanent above? Was it an object or a person, or perhaps a place?

Think of one thing that you perceive as having permanence and then list all the ways that it changes.

Could you create a haiku that captures both aspects of it?
