Much

This week’s word came to me some time after my last Note, when I wrote about walking.

I felt a fleeting pang of very mild enoughness-doubt after writing it. What I mean is, do I walk enough to even write about walking? Or, to put it another way, how much walking do I need to do to feel valid writing about it?

Much
There are 41 meanings for much, according to OED. I don’t sign in to look them up. Instead, I’m sidetracked by its etymon, muckle, meaning a large or bulky amount.
Does much ask us to quantify, or does it do the quantifying?

What comes to mind?

Much ado about nothing.
How much do I have to do something to say that I do it?
How much running do you need to do to call yourself a runner?
How much writing to be a writer?
How much AI use is ok, for me, for what I’m doing?
To clarify, I’ve not used AI to write this, though I can’t promise I’ll ignore any red lines. So, Grammarly’s ok, right?

Where might this week’s word take you?

It’s so easy to assume a lack. Is it justified?

Maybe people aren’t thinking about these things, but if you are, maybe try writing a case for, or against, whatever much you’re weighing up. It might surprise you.
